Everything You Need to Know
About Metal Garages

A practical guide to steel framing, roof styles, sizing, doors, foundations, permits, and installation across Northern California.

Structural Framing & Materials

NorCal Garages utilizes premium galvanized steel coated in heavy zinc to resist weathering, rust, and corrosion. We offer two primary framing thickness levels depending on your lot exposure, local snow load requirements, and budget.

14-Gauge Standard

2.5" x 2.5" steel tubing. The industry standard, offering excellent strength and economic value for most residential storage needs.

12-Gauge Heavy-Duty

Thicker 2.25" x 2.25" steel tubing with higher tensile strength. Highly recommended for structures with spans over 30 feet or high-altitude sites.

20-Year Warranty

Standard on all 12-gauge framing purchases, giving you long-term protection against frame rust-through.

Technical Specifications

Steel Material Galvanized USA Steel
Standard Gauge 14-Gauge (2.5" Tubing)
Heavy Duty Gauge 12-Gauge (2.25" Tubing)

Roof Styles & Wind Loads

Selecting the right roof style is essential to match your home's aesthetics and handle local elements like leaf debris, high winds, and winter precipitation.

Regular Roof

The most economical design. Panels run horizontally from front to back. Ideal for budget-conscious carports and smaller detached garages.

Boxed-Eave Roof

Offers a traditional residential look with horizontal roof panels. Great for matching nearby residential shingles at a moderate price point.

Vertical Roof

The strongest configuration. Steel panels run vertically from peak to eave, letting water, snow, and pine needles slide off easily. Mandatory for buildings 31' or longer.

Technical Specifications

Regular Roof Limit Up to 30 feet wide
Vertical Roof Benefit Best debris/snow shedding
Standard Wind Rating Up to 140 MPH certified
Standard Snow Rating Up to 35 PSF certified

Site Preparation & Foundation

Before our professional crew arrives to install your steel garage, you must ensure the foundation is fully prepared, level, and accessible.

Level Site Policy

The installation site must be level within 3 inches across the entire pad to ensure square framing and prevent door binding.

Anchor Types

We anchor to concrete (using heavy wedge anchors), asphalt (using rebar pins), or ground/dirt (using mobile home helix anchors).

Concrete Slab Specs

We strongly recommend a 4" thick concrete slab (4000 PSI) reinforced with wire mesh and a 12" perimeter footing for local builds.

Site Level Tolerance Within 3" front-to-back
Concrete Slab Specs 4" minimum (4000 PSI)

Obtaining permits, verifying boundary setbacks, and easement compliance are customer responsibilities.

FAQ

Metal Garage Guide FAQ

Which metal garage roof style is strongest?

The A-frame vertical roof is the strongest option because panels run from peak to eave, helping rain, snow, and debris shed more efficiently.

Is 12-gauge steel worth it?

12-gauge steel is recommended for heavier wind, snow, larger buildings, and buyers who want the added confidence of a thicker frame and rust-through warranty.

Can a metal garage be installed without concrete?

Yes, metal garages can be installed on compacted dirt or asphalt, but a concrete slab is strongly recommended for the best seal and long-term performance.

Who handles permits for a metal garage?

Permit requirements vary by location, so customers should check local zoning and building departments. Engineered drawings and calculations can be provided if required.
